Tony Winner Hadestown hits the Road

Cleaning up during the 2018/19 awards season, plucky folk opera Hadestown garnered eight Tony Awards (including the coveted Tony for Best Musical), four Drama Desk Awards, six Outer Critics Circle Awards and a Drama League Award. This came as no surprise given the production received much acclaim during both its Off-Broadway and Broadway runs, praised for its soaring imagination, vibrant retelling of a classic story and a sumptuous score that evokes smoky New Orleans jazz and bubbling Americana-tinged folk. Don’t miss out when the lauded musical hits the road on this hotly anticipated national tour!

Written by indie singer-songwriter Anais Mitchell and brought to vivid life by experimental theatre director Rachel Chavkin (Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812), the musical began its life as a touring concert and concept album before taking to the stage at the New York Theatre Workshop in 2016. Based on the beloved Greek myth of Orpheus and his supernatural journey into the underworld, Mitchell and Rachel give the story a uniquely modern and American sensibility – their Hades is a fearsome King of The Underworld cum factory fat cat boss that torments lost souls with endless mechanic toil. Orpheus is cast as a struggling musician and the post-apocalyptic, depression-era world he lives in is tormented with wild seasons that smack of climate-change.

What is Hadestown about?

Rollicking tunes like ‘Road to Hell’, ‘Way Down Hadestown’ and ‘Wait for Me’ punctuate the story of Orpheus, narrated by Hermes. The penniless muso and poet resolves to retrieve his love, the beautiful runaway Eurydice, when she is tempted by Hades to enter the underworld in a bid to escape the frost, famine and empty bellies of the winter months brought on by Persephone’s annual tenure below. As with the ancient original, tragedy awaits in the wings, offset by exquisite melodies, jaunty rhythms and a brilliant, inventive way of story telling.

Alabama can rightly claim to be the band who made country music what it is today. Formed by three cousins in 1969, the band hit their peak in the 1980s with their blend of southern rock and twangy country balladry, a formula that everyone from Garth Brooks to Luke Bryan has built upon in the subsequent years. Now for Alabama are back on the road to celebrating over 50 years of making music!

July 2023 – What’s On Mirvish

0

Mirvish

Royal Alexandra Theatre, CAA Theatre, CAA Ed Mirvish Theatre, Princess of Wales Theatre
JULY 2023
“I’D LIKE TO STOP FOR MY BABY TONIGHT,
AND BLOW MY TOP WITH MY BABY TONIGHT,
BUT I’D BE A FLOP WITH BABY TONIGHT,
‘CAUSE IT’S TOO DARN HOT.”
“Too Darn Hot,” Kiss Me, Kate, 1949
These wickedly naughty lyrics by Mr. Cole Porter are highly apropos for the sizzling month of July!

But this month it will be sizzling in another way — as we host not one but two of Broadway’s hottest shows at our theatres — Hamilton and Hadestown — playing side-by-side on King Street West. That means Luanne from HR can see two Tony-winning Best Musicals in one day or over two nights… in air-conditioned bliss! She’s already chosen her double-show day.

Also this month our very own Canadian company of SIX The Musical begins rehearsals in Toronto before opening at Edmonton’s Citadel Theatre for a summer engagement. After Edmonton, SIX begins in Toronto on September 23 at the Royal Alexandra Theatre. Toby from Accounting won’t admit it, but we know he’s in love with the music; we can see him lipsynching to the live cast album on his headphones.

Alas, it isn’t all happy news for July. This Sunday, we say a tearful goodbye to our production of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child as it ends its record-breaking run at the CAA Ed Mirvish Theatre. That’s right — you only have few more chances to see this jaw-dropping production before it disappears from Toronto!

42ND STREET OPENS TO RAVES IN LONDON
Jonathan Church‘s brand-SPANKING new production of the classic showbiz musical 42nd Street — which will be coming to us this holiday season — recently opened to rave reviews at London’s Sadler Wells Theatre. One of our most enthusiastic and loyal subscribers Mertel from Bowmanville emailed us with some of her favourite plaudits. We quite like them too!

“Utterly fabulous. Church’s production is a triumph of incandescent liquid choreography, the tap dancing sequences so mesmeric and weightless they induce a sort of trance. Classic tunes — We’re in the Money; Lullaby of Broadway; the noirish 42nd Street finale — send the soul soaring. If you want to feel the beat of the dancing feet, this really is the only show in town.” – The Telegraph

“Irresistibly joyous new production of the tap-tastic musical about a musical! Jonathan Church’s new production of the shimmering 1933 Busby Berkeley movie turned-stage musical is a sequin-studded riot.” – Time Out

“A perfect production. It’s (forty) second to none!”Daily Mail

IN DREAMS PREMIERES IN LEEDS NEXT WEEK
Toby from Accounting is a big fan of the musical & Juliet. If you were lucky enough to have seen the sold-out pre-Broadway engagement at the Princess of Wales Theatre last summer, you would’ve fallen in love with it just as much as Toby. So ever since we announced that we are presenting the new musical from writer David West Read and director Luke Sheppard (the creators behind last season’s smash & Juliet), he’s been extremely excited. This new musical, featuring the iconic songs of Roy Orbison, will have its North American premiere engagement at the CAA Ed Mirvish Theatre beginning September 26. Tickets just went on sale to the public today. The show is currently in tech rehearsals, but we do have a sneak peak video of the show with the cast — led by Tony-winner Lena Hall and Oliver Tompsett (who played Shakespeare in the original West End cast of & Juliet) — singing Roy Orbison’s Handle with Care, along with the creative team discussing their creation.

#AgaKhanMuseum #RhythmsOfCanada2023

The Aga Khan Museum is built on land that is and has been under the stewardship of many Indigenous peoples over millennia, including the Anishinaabe, the Haudenosaunee, the Wendat and, most recently, the Mississaugas of the Credit Nation. We are grateful for the opportunity to work and live on this land and be in this territory.
